This quick and simple blood test measures the amount of allergen-specific antibodies in your blood (IgE), which is an indicator of allergic sensitization. It can detect hundreds of allergy triggers and can be administered to people of any age, including young children.
Anyone experiencing allergy-like symptoms can undergo an allergy blood test. Symptoms include skin rashes, itchiness, swelling, nauesea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
For babies and young children, one blood sample collection is often less traumatic and invasive than a skin prick test, which involves scraping the top layer of skin multiple times. Unlike a skin-prick test, a blood test does not trigger allergic reactions. This is particularly important for children facing life-threatening allergic reactions.
Unlike a skin-prick test, a blood test can be performed on those with skin conditions (e.g eczema). This blood test is also considered safe for those who are pregnant, however we recommended checking with your healthcare provider beforehand.
Skin reactivity may change with age. So while it has no impact on the validity of blood tests, skin-prick tests are not equally reliable in infants and older adults.
